Maternity Photo Sessions

A maternity photography session is a beautiful way to highlight and treasure this special time in your life. Maternity photoshoots are becoming more and more popular as moms-to-be want to celebrate their bodies and memorialize this life-changing moment. If you’re expecting a bundle of joy soon and are considering a maternity photoshoot, keep these tips in mind to make sure you have everything you’ll need.

How to Prepare for Your Maternity Photo Session

Before your maternity photo session, make sure to talk with your photographer about your photo ideas. If you’re planning on taking any nude, partially nude, or implied images taken, your photographer needs to know how to arrange the photoshoot setting to provide a comfortable space for you to undress and change.

Other things to get ready for your maternity photoshoot include:

  • Get a manicure and pedicure to match the overall aesthetic of the photos
  • Get as much rest as possible the night before
  • Eat and drink plenty of foods and liquids during your session to make sure (and your baby) feel comfortable

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session

Ideally, you want to plan. Try to book your photoshoot by your 2nd trimester. Booking ahead will help you reserve the photographer’s time and will let you shop around for you to find a person that matches your style and needs.

Plan to have your maternity photoshoot when you’re 32 to 36 weeks pregnant. You will be just the right size to show your baby bump while still comfortable enough to move around.

What to Bring With You

On the day of the photoshoot, you might want to consider bringing your spouse and other children to the photo session. While you will have plenty of images by yourself and your little bundle of joy, sharing this experience with your family will make it even more special.

In addition, you might want to bring special items that help you personalize your photoshoot. Heirlooms, ultrasounds, decorative accents, and other special things with special meaning will be great additions.

What to Wear for a Maternity Photo Shoot

Finally, make sure you’re wearing the right clothes for your photoshoot. You’ll want to discuss with your photographer what you'd like to wear and arrange a variety of gowns to try on. Ideally, you want to bring a few options to look at, but I personally provide wardrobe options for my clients. Stretchy and flowy fabric clothing will help you in different poses and add more depth to the photos. In most cases, neutrals and rich colors work best to create a beautiful contrast with the studio backdrop. Discuss with your photographer for ideas and inspiration to help you find the perfect maternity photoshoot styles.
